The RIBA/ICE McAslan Bursary was set up in 2004 to promote social and community improvements in the UK and overseas, through collaborative projects developed by teams of architectural and engineering students, and recent graduates.

The projects are a fusion of practically innovative design, and local collaborations, that aim to improve quality of lives in deprived or enervating conditions, and to  usefully connect one situation or perception with another in socially and physically constructive ways.

The projects touch on a range of pressing issue, such as improving the quality of urban life and public space, shelter and refugee housing, energy conservation, and using architecture as an education tool. Some projects are architectural, others conceptual or social, and in every case, they reinforce the value of interdisciplinary collaborations between design professionals, and communities.
