The Grow Brighton site is a run-down former municipal market on the edge of the city centre's commercial core. This scheme will create 175 new homes and offices, retail outlets and community buildings, and generate more than 600 jobs in the area.
The project contains an unusual mix of functions: a street market, retail with cafe, children's nursery, library, gallery and dance studios. Multi-occupancy workspaces will promote small and medium businesses which, with the new apartments, will attract a diverse range of occupants. At the heart of the development is a new landscaped public space.
This mix of complementary and contrasting building types are sustained within a highly flexible low energy-use environment, serviced by centralised combined heat and power plant, and waste management and recycling facilities. All residential accommodation will be car-free, as the site is perfectly placed for public transport links to the city centre and surrounding districts.
