John Lewis at Liverpool One

JMP has completed the design for a new John Lewis department store in Liverpool’s Paradise Street Development for Grosvenor. The practice was selected following an international design competition in 2004.

The new store occupies a pivotal site within the masterplan, next to Chavasse Park, at the corner of Paradise Street and Canning Place. It’s a key site within the development achieving a number of overlapping urban design objectives. The proposed building will provide 22,000sqm of accommodation over four floors with basement servicing.

The building is a concrete framed construction with a layered façade comprising sandstone panels, full height glazing, articulated fins, and cornice elements. The curvilinear form follows the natural geometries of the existing streets and will provide cafes and public areas within daylit interior volumes. The result: wonderful views of the park, the waterfront, and a panorama of the city.
