The Lavender Sure Start Children's Centre is a 1,000sqm neighbourhood nursery and community facility. The nursery provides flexible accommodation that meets a range of local community needs, and its café is a social hub that provides access to internal and external amenities.
Conceived as a ‘pavilion in the park’, the Lavender Sure Start Nursery sits in a grove of trees forming part of the wider landscape setting, which includes open playing fields, playground and allotments. The modular design meant that the nursery could be built rapidly, using elements prefabricated off-site. The building was constructed using sustainably sourced building materials, and is environmentally responsive through its orientation, which optimises daylight penetration and natural ventilation.
The project helped to pioneer the government’s Sure Start programme, which is designed to improve health, the ability to learn, social and emotional development, and to strengthen families and communities. The new building’s distinct, highly clarified architecture is a key focal-point for local regeneration.
