The Learning Zone provides space for all students to learn in the format they desire, in an open, relaxed atmosphere. Facilities such as this at Lancaster University have previously been restricted to a few select courses, however these new facilities will be open to any student or academic across the campus. Provided within is a range of different learning areas, ranging from fixed, technology rich ‘pods’ to individual, flexibly arranged study booths. The whole space is flexible to the users’ needs allowing them to customise their environment as they so wish.

The existing Bowland College building was extended into Alexandra Square at ground floor level to form the Learning Zone.

The new extension has a simple, modern appearance that complements the existing building but announces the important new use at ground level. The facility provides accommodation for around 300 students at any one time. This is one of a series of projects undertaken for Lancaster University, including a masterplan, a postgraduate statistics centre, and an extension to the University's management school.
