This new Academy in Sandwell, Tipton is sponsored by The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and will provide teaching accommodation for 1,100 pupils, including 200 sixth formers, and will specialise in health and citizenship subject matter. The design proposals include flexible and adaptable classrooms with modern ICT and WiFi throughout. Work/study areas and quiet areas will be provided, along with extended sport facilities. The Academy's design is expected to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.
The Academy is pioneering the new ‘Opening Minds’ curriculum. This employs a project-based approach to learning, which covers a combination of skills across the project, rather than concentrating on separate subjects. This has resulted in large open plan classrooms (70m²), which have flexible moveable walls to allow connection to adjacent classrooms, wet areas and moveable furniture to allow for increased flexibility.
