Universal House

Universal House was once a starkly unattractive 1960s office block in inner-city Manchester. Refurbished and re-programmed using a self-contained ‘campus’ strategy, the four-winged, 280,000sqft office building now has a new, commercially sustainable character, and has encouraged further local urban regeneration.

The ground-plane along the main elevation facing Devonshire Street was re-cast using black limeston, to open up the ground floor of the building; the entrance sequence has been reprogrammed with a new canopy and glass walkway to the adjoining 1930s warehouse, which opens up the building providing a vibrant, active frontage to Devonshire Street and the public domain.

There’s a new through-route to the newly formed ground floor café, meeting room, and shop; bands of granite aggregate panelling on the facades have been cleaned to re-emphasise the original architecture of the building and new landscaping in the courtyard behind Universal House, featuring tree-planting and granite seating, has created a convivial break-out space for office users.

Elsewhere, the remaining rationalisation of site includes improvements to car parking.  Total car parking numbers onsite also increased despite the loss of courtyard area.
