In December 2011 the William Road Gallery opened its doors to 'La Nueva Ola', a Spanish design show hosted by Wallpaper* Magazine. The one-day exhibition, curated by Wallpaper* editor- at -large Henrietta Thompson, showcased the best works from up-and-coming designers based in Barcelona and Valencia. Designs from seven studios beautifully filled the gallery space and were admired by 150+ guests who enjoyed tapas and Spanish inspired drinks while DJ Yasmina Dexter played the decks into the night.

Dr. Penny Tinkler: Picturing Young Girls’ Photo Collections from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

This year-long Writing Photography series investigates different approaches, both creative and academic, to writing about photography.

While there have been several historical studies of photos of young people, especially children, there has been relatively little attention paid to the photos collected by young people in the past. Although the study of girls' photo collections has the potential to expand and enrich the historiography of youth, this potential is not realised easily.

Focusing on the photo collections of girls who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, this talk will explore how an investigation of these can offer a 'youth perspective' on growing up in the past. It also engages with photographic practices: how girls produced, accumulated, and used photos can be revealing of girls' priorities, interests, and concerns.

Penny Tinkler is Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences, University of Manchester.
